The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has moved aggressively against alleged corruption at the State Department for Sports, targeting senior officials accused of siphoning off more than Kes3.8 billion.
The operation, carried out on November 5, 2025, saw EACC officials execute court-authorized search warrants at the suspects’ homes and offices, including several private companies linked to the case.
Those under investigation include Caroline Muthoni Kariuki, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Sports; Otis Mutwiri Nturibi, Deputy Accountant General for ASALs & Regional Development; and David Muasya Musau, an accountant at the State Department for Sports.
Two private company directors, Dickson Kibunyi Mahia and Maureen Wangui Wambugu, are also implicated.
The alleged corruption spans financial years 2020/2021 and 2025/2026, with officials accused of exploiting their positions to embezzle public funds through collusion and procurement irregularities.
EACC’s raids stretched across Nairobi, Nanyuki, Machakos, Kiambu, and Nyeri counties, targeting both residences and offices for evidence gathering.
Seized items paint a picture of the scale of alleged misuse of public resources. Authorities recovered Kes5.46 million in cash, government securities worth Kes597 million, 13 vehicles, 28 plots of land, and 37 bank accounts.
The materials are now central to ongoing investigations and could be critical in building cases for prosecution.
After the operation, the suspects were taken to EACC’s Integrity Centre for interviews and statement recording.
The agency said the inquiry will determine the next steps, which may include prosecuting those found culpable and recovering unexplained wealth.
An EACC official stated that public officers who abuse trust will face strict action and that the commission is committed to safeguarding taxpayer resources.
The move has triggered public interest, as citizens await clarity on accountability in government departments, particularly in sectors handling large budgets.
