Tanzania is facing widespread shortages of food, fuel, and money following violent protests that erupted after the country’s general elections on Wednesday, October 29.

According to the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), the unrest has severely disrupted essential supplies and services, forcing the UK to elevate its travel advisory against visiting Tanzania.

“FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Tanzania due to disruption and unrest following the October 29 election. There are shortages of food, fuel, and cash, compounded by the lack of internet services,” the advisory stated.

The UK Embassy in Tanzania reported that the situation has worsened due to the government’s decision to shut down internet access, blocking communication and online banking across the nation.

Road blockades, curfews, and flight cancellations have also paralyzed transport networks. Several international flights to and from Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam have been suspended, while operations at Arusha and Kilimanjaro International Airports remain limited.

Similarly, ferry services between Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar and SGR train operations have been halted.

“We urge UK citizens in Tanzania to limit movements, follow local authorities’ advice, and stay updated through reliable local media,” the FCDO added.

The unrest follows the declaration of President Samia Suluhu Hassan as the winner of the disputed elections after securing 97.66% of the vote.

Opposition leaders have rejected the results, claiming massive rigging and voter suppression, arguing that the election was neither free nor fair.

Suluhu, who first assumed office in 2021 following the death of former President John Magufuli, will now serve a new five-year term, though her victory has deepened tensions in the East African nation.
