Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has urged the Kenyan government to act swiftly following the killing of a Kenyan teacher in Tanzania.
The legislator said the death of Mr. John Ogutu, who taught at Sky School Primary in Kinondoni, Dar es Salaam, was both shocking and unacceptable.
In a statement issued on social media, Owino demanded that the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs engage Tanzanian authorities to ensure a full and transparent investigation.
He said credible information from the family confirmed that Ogutu was preparing to travel back to Kenya when he was fatally shot amid post-election violence.
“The killing of Mr. Ogutu is not just a personal tragedy but a national concern. Every Kenyan living or working abroad deserves protection and dignity. Justice must be served for this heinous act," the MP stated.
The outspoken MP called on the government to take responsibility for repatriating Ogutu’s body and supporting his family during their time of grief.
He also pressed for counselling and consular assistance, saying it was the government’s duty to stand with affected families in times of distress.
Owino further challenged the Ministry to present a statement before Parliament detailing measures in place to protect Kenyans working abroad, particularly within the East African Community (EAC).
He said the principles of free movement and residence guaranteed by regional treaties must translate into real safety for citizens.
The lawmaker described Ogutu’s killing as a wake-up call for the Kenyan government to strengthen its foreign policy and ensure accountability in cases where citizens face harm outside the country.
