A recent speech by former President Uhuru Kenyatta during a funeral service for a former legislator has sparked national debate, with the former Head of State emphasizing unity and urging politicians to avoid tribal politics, hate, and insults.
The speech also appeared to carry subtle political undertones, with Uhuru warning residents of the Mt. Kenya region against repeating past political decisions, which many interpreted as a reference to the 2022 election and President William Ruto’s rise to power.
Speaking on Friday, April 3, through his official X account, city lawyer and Senior Counsel Ahmednassir Abdullahi weighed in on the speech, arguing that the former President has mastered the art of delivering powerful messages after leaving office, while failing to practice the same principles during his tenure.
According to Ahmednassir, Uhuru Kenyatta’s presidency did not reflect the values he now publicly promotes, describing his leadership record as inconsistent with his current message.
“I listened carefully to the English language part of H.E Uhuru's speech. And this is the paradox of the native when he isn't in office. Uhuru lists very good attributes of a leader. Yet his tenure was the antithesis of the good attributes of a leader he gives,” Ahmednassir stated.
The remarks add to ongoing political debate surrounding the legacy of Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration and its impact on Kenya’s current political landscape.
The discussion continues to draw mixed reactions online, with supporters and critics weighing in on both the former President’s speech and Ahmednassir’s response.
