Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has warned school principals against imposing unauthorized levies on parents, saying the government will continue taking disciplinary action against administrators who violate Ministry of Education regulations.
Speaking during the Mbiriri Comprehensive School Education Day in Nyeri County, Ogamba emphasized that schools must obtain all necessary approvals before introducing any charges beyond the government-approved school fees.
The CS revealed that several principals have already been disciplined for collecting illegal levies without following the ministry's approval procedures.
He stressed that while schools are allowed to seek additional funding for development projects, such contributions must first be approved through the required government processes, accepted by parents, and cleared by the Ministry of Education before they can be collected.
Ogamba warned that any principal found imposing unauthorized charges would face disciplinary action, insisting that illegal levies should never become a burden on parents.
Beyond school fees, the CS called on school administrators to strengthen engagement with students to address the rising cases of unrest in learning institutions.
His remarks come shortly after the unrest at Nyabisase Mixed Secondary School in Kisii County, where students vandalized school property.
Ogamba said the government will ensure those responsible face the law while also investigating the root causes of indiscipline to prevent similar incidents in the future.
During the event, Mbiriri Comprehensive School Board Chairperson Purity Ngina praised the Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum, saying it has transformed learning by allowing students to demonstrate practical skills and talents rather than focusing solely on examinations.
The Ministry of Education maintains that enforcing approved school fee guidelines, promoting dialogue between schools, parents, and learners, and addressing the causes of student unrest are key steps toward creating a safer and more effective learning environment.
