Veteran journalist and KANU spokesperson Tony Gachoka has officially announced that he will contest the Nairobi gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election, setting up what is expected to be a fierce political battle for control of the capital.
Speaking during his announcement, Gachoka said he is seeking to transform Nairobi by fighting corruption, dismantling cartels, improving service delivery, and restoring integrity in the county government. He argued that Nairobi deserves leadership focused on accountability and development.
Gachoka revealed that before declaring his bid, he held consultations with several senior political leaders, including KANU chairman Gideon Moi, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, as part of efforts to build a broad opposition coalition.
According to Gachoka, coalition politics will play a decisive role in determining who wins the Nairobi governorship. He expressed confidence that he has the backing of key opposition figures and suggested that he is well placed to unite different political camps ahead of the election.
The veteran journalist also hinted that the race could become a two-horse contest, saying he expects to face Embakasi East MP Babu Owino if both secure support from their respective political alliances.
The announcement adds a new twist to the battle for Nairobi, with several prominent politicians expected to join the race as parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election. Analysts believe the contest will be one of the country's most closely watched political battles.
