Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye has been transferred from Luzira Prison to hospital after his health reportedly deteriorated, with his wife raising fresh concerns about his condition.
Besigye was moved to the Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC) on Friday, August 28, according to his wife, Winnie Byanyima. The transfer took place after dark as his condition continued to cause concern.
Byanyima said Besigye remains extremely weak and is struggling with basic movements and communication.
The opposition leader has experienced ongoing health problems since collapsing during a court session in Kampala on July 29 while attending proceedings in his treason case.
He was initially taken to Mulago National Referral Hospital, where he spent about 10 days before being returned to Luzira Prison on August 7.
His family has repeatedly called for him to receive specialised medical treatment outside the prison system and has asked authorities to allow him to travel to Geneva for further care.
Byanyima has also questioned why Besigye continues to be moved between prison and medical facilities while his health remains fragile.
Besigye has been in detention since November 2024 and is facing treason-related charges, which he denies.
His continued detention and medical condition have attracted attention from his family, political supporters and rights groups, who have called for his health needs to be given priority.
Ugandan authorities have previously said prisoners who require specialised treatment unavailable within the prison system can access appropriate medical care, including treatment from personal doctors.
The latest hospital transfer has renewed calls for authorities to provide Besigye with adequate medical attention as his legal case continues.
