The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched an investigation into the death of Dennis Aremo Osiemo while in police custody at Narumoru Police Station in Nyeri County.
Osiemo died on Sunday, September 20, 2026, two days after he was arrested in Kisii County by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers with assistance from police in Keroka, Nyamira County.
IPOA said its investigators were sent to the police station to establish the circumstances surrounding his death. The authority is also expected to be involved in the post-mortem examination, together with members of Osiemo’s family.
The DCI said Osiemo had been arrested in connection with an assault case reported at Narumoru Police Station. According to detectives, he was traced to Kisii and arrested on September 18 before being booked at Keroka Police Station.
He was later transferred to Narumoru, where the DCI said he was processed and his statement recorded. Investigators said he was expected to appear in court on September 21.
However, police later found him dead inside the cell on September 20. The DCI said the scene was processed in the presence of IPOA officers, senior police officers and a relative before the body was taken to the mortuary.
IPOA is now examining the circumstances surrounding the death, including events during Osiemo’s time in custody.
The post-mortem findings will form part of the investigation as the oversight authority works to establish what happened before his death.
IPOA has said it will provide further updates once the investigation progresses.
