Activists Bob Njagi and Nicholas Oyoo are safely back after 38 days of being missing in Uganda.
Their sudden release in Busia late Friday night has brought relief to families, friends, and human rights advocates across the region.
The pair vanished amid concerns over their civic activism while attending a campaign rally for opposition leader Bobi Wine, prompting widespread campaigns demanding their safe return.
Faith Odhiambo, President of the Law Society of Kenya, expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed to their release.
“We welcome the safe release of Nicholas Oyoo and Bob Njagi. We thank their families, colleagues in the Free Kenya Movement, human rights defenders, journalists, and the Ministries of Foreign Affairs in Kenya and Tanzania for their tireless efforts," the LSK president said.
The activists are being transferred to Nairobi, where arrangements are being made for a reunion with loved ones and supporters.
Odhiambo highlighted the broader significance of their release.
“This moment represents a key step toward protecting human rights for East Africans anywhere in the East African Community,” she said.
Their disappearance had alarmed civil society and advocacy groups, with organizations such as Amnesty International calling for immediate action.
The activists’ safe return follows persistent diplomatic efforts and public campaigns that kept the issue in the spotlight.
Njagi and Oyoo’s homecoming is expected to reignite discussions on human rights, accountability, and protections for civic actors across East Africa.
