Detectives have widened investigations into possible terror support cells in Nairobi after arresting a woman during an intelligence-backed operation in Eastleigh.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the Thursday night raid led to the apprehension of Asho Kassim Hassan, who is suspected of providing assistance to a terrorist organisation.

The DCI’s statement indicated that officers from the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) traced the suspect to a residential block along Major Muriithi Street following coordinated surveillance.

The operation forms part of ongoing counter-terror efforts in urban centres, particularly Nairobi, where security agencies have intensified monitoring to prevent recruitment and logistical support activities.

According to the agency, detectives recovered a Kenyan passport and a mobile phone during the arrest. These items have been handed to forensic experts for analysis to determine communication patterns and any associates linked to the alleged network.

The results are expected to guide subsequent investigative steps, including possible additional arrests.

Hassan is being held in custody as ATPU officers prepare to present her before court. The DCI noted that her alleged engagement involved soliciting and offering support to a proscribed group, a crime that carries heavy penalties under Kenyan law.

Past cases handled by the ATPU have shown that early detection of facilitators is critical in preventing attempts to radicalise youths or fund extremist operations.

The operation highlights the country’s evolving counter-terror strategy, which blends surveillance, community outreach, and inter-agency coordination.

Kenya has strengthened such systems in the decade following the 2013 Westgate attack, which prompted reforms within the National Police Service and closer collaboration between the intelligence and investigative arms of government.

The DCI added that community partnerships played a role in the Eastleigh operation, consistent with the agency’s recent push encouraging residents to report unusual activity.

Eastleigh has historically been a focal point for both economic activity and security concerns, prompting sustained monitoring to safeguard the neighbourhood’s commercial vibrancy.

Officials stressed that the investigation remains active and will continue to assess whether the suspect’s activities extend beyond Nairobi.

The DCI reiterated its commitment to maintaining public safety and urged Kenyans to support ongoing efforts through timely information-sharing with authorities.
