The Kenyan gospel community is mourning the loss of Betty Bayo, one of the most beloved Kikuyu gospel artists, who passed away on Monday, November 10, after a prolonged battle with blood cancer (leukaemia).

Born Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua, Betty’s passing was confirmed by her former partner, Pastor Victor Kanyari, with whom she shared two children. Kanyari revealed that she breathed her last while receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital.

In a heartfelt tribute shared on social media, Pastor Kanyari expressed his pain and admiration for the late singer:

“It hurts in ways I can’t explain. You left before I could say everything I needed to. I still see you in our children’s smiles and in the little habits that remind me of you. Through it all, you were family. I’ll carry your memory, love, and spirit forever. Rest easy—you’ll always be missed.”

Prominent figures in the gospel industry, including Bishop Benson Gathungu Kamau, also mourned her passing, describing her as a radiant soul whose life revolved around faith and music.

“She lived a joyful life of praise and service to God until her diagnosis with advanced blood cancer. Betty Bayo’s contribution to gospel music and her uplifting spirit will never be forgotten,” Bishop Gathungu stated.

Inooro TV news anchor Wakarura Wa Nyutu also paid tribute, recalling her final moments with the late musician:

“Last Monday, I was at your house. We talked, laughed, and stayed up late. I truly believed you’d recover. I can’t believe you’re gone.”

Betty Bayo rose to national fame with her chart-topping gospel hit “Eleventh Hour”, a song that touched countless hearts with its message of faith and hope.

In August 2025, she had shared a photo of herself in hospital wearing an oxygen mask, sparking concern among fans. She later mentioned that the cold weather had worsened her condition but kept details of her illness private.

Her untimely death leaves behind two children, a grieving family, and a lasting legacy of inspiring gospel music that continues to uplift millions.
