The government has confirmed that 39 people have died following the devastating landslide in Elgeyo Marakwet County, with nine others still reported missing.

Six survivors are receiving medical treatment as rescue and recovery efforts continue across the affected villages.

Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura issued the 11th official update on Tuesday, stating that search teams are working round the clock to ensure every missing person is accounted for and that all affected families receive adequate support.

“The Government remains dedicated to ensuring that every missing person is accounted for, and every affected family receives adequate support,” Mwaura said in a statement shared on X.

The tragedy, which struck parts of Kerio Valley, Embobut, and Keiyo North, has left several families displaced and homes destroyed.

Heavy rains that pounded the region last week triggered the landslides, burying homes and farmlands under mud and debris.

Mwaura announced that burial arrangements for the victims have been finalized. A funeral for a grandmother and her grandchild from Kibendo area, Keiyo North, will take place on Friday, November 14.

A mass funeral service for victims from Kerio Valley is set for Friday, November 21, while burials for those from Embobut and Upper Sambirir will follow on Saturday, November 22.

In support of affected families, a national fundraiser (harambee) will be held on Thursday, November 13, at AIC Milimani Church in Nairobi from 4:00 pm.

Mwaura urged Kenyans, institutions, and organizations to stand with the victims as they rebuild their lives.

“This moment calls for unity, empathy, and collective responsibility,” he said, adding that the government remains committed to providing humanitarian assistance, resettlement, and long-term recovery programs for affected households.

Efforts are also underway to restore livelihoods and strengthen community resilience against future disasters. Mwaura assured that no family affected by the tragedy would be left behind.

Authorities have urged residents in high-risk areas of Elgeyo Marakwet and neighboring counties to remain vigilant as heavy rains continue across the Rift Valley region.
