Lawyer and political activist Miguna Miguna has issued a public apology to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua after sharing a screenshot falsely suggesting a 50-50 power-sharing deal with Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
In a statement posted on social media, Miguna admitted the screenshot was misleading and clarified that it did not represent Gachagua’s actual position.
“This is to sincerely apologize to Mr. Rigathi Gachagua for sharing what appears to be a fake screenshot of what he purportedly said about a 50/50 power-sharing arrangement with Kalonzo Musyoka,” he wrote.
Miguna emphasized his commitment to transparency and merit-based governance, distancing himself from the circulation of false political content.
“As a man of integrity who is committed to the transformation of Kenya from a society governed by lies, graft, thuggery, and ethnic chauvinism to a merit-based society, I don't subscribe to the politics of lies, distortion, and empty propaganda,” he said.
While reiterating his opposition to what he described as Gachagua’s politics of tribalism, Miguna condemned the creation and spread of misinformation.
“Whereas we strongly disagree with Rigathi’s documented politics of tribal jingoism, we abhor the manufacture and dissemination of false statements by tyrant William Ruto’s propaganda machine to sow unnecessary seeds of confusion and division,” Miguna added.
The apology comes as Kenya’s political parties begin preparing for the 2027 general elections, a period often marked by heightened political messaging and misinformation.
The incident highlights challenges in Kenya’s digital political landscape, where unverified screenshots and social media claims can quickly shape public perception, reinforcing calls for responsible political communication and fact-checking.
