Ndegwa Njiru Flags Rising Tensions in the House, Says Wiper MPs Are “Keeping Checks Alive”

Lawyer Ndegwa Njiru has publicly praised Wiper legislators for consistent oversight during recent confrontations in the chamber.

Njiru shared the remarks on X, saying the MPs are playing a vital role at a time when contentious government proposals continue to dominate the order paper.

In his post, Njiru said legislators from the Wiper Democratic Movement, including Robert Mbui and Julius Mawathe, often enter debates where the numerical advantage of the Kenya Kwanza coalition shapes most decisions.

According to him, the opposition party has faced a challenging environment marked by interruptions and failed motions when raising concerns about disputed bills.

The comments come as the House navigates several high-stakes debates tied to national taxation, budget policy, and regulatory changes.

These sessions regularly draw contrasting positions from the majority and minority, a pattern that has become common since the 2010 Constitution strengthened Parliament’s legislative mandate and enhanced public participation requirements.

Njiru argued that Wiper representatives have been vocal on matters touching on the cost of living and government accountability.

His post emphasised that the MPs have pushed ministries and state agencies to clarify issues linked to financial management and policy implementation.

He said the legislators were taking that stance despite what he views as strong resistance from the majority side.

Parliamentary observers note that minority parties traditionally rely on procedural tools such as proposed amendments, points of order, and committee scrutiny to influence legislation.

These mechanisms remain available even when the majority has the votes to pass a bill, though they often trigger prolonged debate and sharp exchanges on the floor.

Njiru’s message also aligns with a wider conversation about how opposition parties operate within a highly polarised political climate.

Wiper, which is part of the Azimio coalition, has positioned itself as an active critic of several government proposals, particularly on taxes and fast-tracked legislative timelines.

Njiru credited the MPs with maintaining that posture through what he described as sustained pressure from the ruling coalition.

While his remarks reflect one perspective, they highlight the continuing contest between the two sides as Parliament prepares for further votes on fiscal and administrative measures.

House leadership has previously urged MPs to adhere to standing orders and maintain decorum during debates as the legislative calendar enters a busy period.
