Radio personality Oga Obinna has won a Ksh 6.1 million defamation case against Radio Africa Group, the parent company of Radio Jambo, after a court found that the station aired false and damaging claims about him.
Obinna revealed on social media that he filed the lawsuit last year after a socialite appeared on Massawe Japanni’s show on Radio Jambo and made defamatory remarks about him. He noted that the host failed to verify the allegations before broadcasting them, leading to widespread criticism and damage to his reputation.
“We successfully sued Radio Jambo for defamation, and today we’ve won,” Obinna shared. “The socialite made false statements about me, yet we have never met. The host and producers didn’t ask for proof — they just aired it for views and likes.”
The case named Radio Africa Group, Massawe Japanni, and the socialite as defendants. Obinna stated that, despite previously working with Massawe at QFM and Radio Africa, the team made no attempt to confirm the story with him before it aired.
He added that the broadcast caused significant harm to his public image and career, with many people insulting him online and offline. Despite this, none of the defendants offered an apology.
During the ruling, Senior Principal Magistrate Edward Too awarded Obinna a total of Ksh 6.1 million in damages, including:
Ksh 5 million in general damages
Ksh 500,000 for aggravated damages
Ksh 500,000 in lieu of an apology
Ksh 100,000 for exemplary damages
The court also issued an injunction barring the defendants from publishing any further defamatory remarks about the media personality.
Obinna, who has previously worked at Kiss 100 and Nation FM, warned that he will not hesitate to take legal action against anyone spreading falsehoods about him.
“If you keep defaming me, I’ll just sue you and use the money to finish building my home,” he quipped.
