Siaya Governor James Orengo has urged ODM youth delegates to safeguard the party’s autonomy, saying the organisation still holds significant leverage in national politics.

He delivered the message on Friday during the ODM youth convention in Mombasa, part of a week-long programme marking the party’s 20th anniversary.

Orengo told the gathering that ODM’s influence remains central to Kenya’s political balance, adding that internal conversations should reflect that reality.

According to him, party members must avoid narratives that portray ODM as seeking favour from President William Ruto.

He argued that President Ruto benefits more from ODM’s political weight than the party benefits from any alliance with State House, remarks he made directly to the youth delegates in attendance.

The governor referenced comments made moments earlier by Dr. Oburu Oginga, who assured the audience that the party would not be absorbed into government.

Orengo said Oginga’s stance reflected the expectations of long–serving members who believe ODM must maintain its identity and continue shaping political debate from its position within Parliament.

He told the convention that this independence is part of what has defined the party since its formation in 2005.

Orengo used the event to revisit Raila Odinga’s contribution to Kenya’s political history. He told delegates that Odinga’s role in major democratic transitions has given ODM a foundation stronger than that of past administrations.

He said Odinga left behind a movement that remains active in legislative oversight, with MPs and senators playing a visible role in key debates in both Houses.

The gathering in Mombasa drew delegates from across the country, highlighting the party’s efforts to energise its youth wing.

The convention also served as an opportunity for ODM to reflect on two decades of political involvement, which includes participation in constitutional review processes, coalition politics, and national dialogue efforts.

Orengo urged young members to stay engaged as the party plans for future political cycles.

He said the youth are expected to help carry forward ODM’s reform agenda and continue shaping its direction in the coming years.

His remarks formed part of a broader reflection on the party’s past achievements and its evolving role in Kenya’s political space, as shared during the anniversary events in Mombasa.
