Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai took to X on Friday to respond to EALA MP Winnie Odinga’s comments at the ODM youth convention in Mombasa, which marked the party’s 20th anniversary.

The exchange has brought attention to internal debates over authority, legacy, and the role of youth in Kenya’s oldest opposition party.

During the convention, Winnie Odinga warned against individuals undermining ODM through secret deals.

“I have heard there are those walking with us during the day and then trying to sell our party at night.

ODM was not born in a bedroom, so its future will not be discussed as pillow talk,” she said, highlighting the sacrifices of the party’s founders and the ongoing commitment of young members to uphold its principles.

Alai countered her remarks on X, questioning her capacity to direct party affairs.

“Winnie Odinga doesn’t have the political experience to give anyone direction in ODM. She isn’t even a party official,” he wrote.

He also criticized her use of bedroom metaphors as demeaning to fellow female leaders.

“The fact that you are daughter to Baba Raila Odinga doesn’t give you the right to insult female leaders in ODM. Your claim to the throne is because of the bloodline and not because of any unique thing you have done,” Alai added.

The disagreement comes amid ongoing discussions about leadership succession and generational influence within ODM.

Historically, the party has balanced leadership between seasoned politicians and younger members advocating for reforms and active participation in shaping policy and electoral strategy.

Winnie Odinga’s comments reflect a broader push by younger members to assert their role in party affairs, while Alai’s response emphasizes scrutiny over qualifications and political experience.
