President William Ruto announced a major boost to Kenya’s defence and research sectors during the third graduation ceremony at the National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K) in Lanet, Nakuru County.
The president highlighted plans to strengthen the country’s security through advanced training, technological upgrades, and increased investment in innovation.
Speaking to the graduating class of 2025, Ruto said the government is equipping the military with cutting-edge tools, including Artificial Intelligence, to address fast-evolving threats with precision and confidence.
“We are strengthening our defence forces through cutting-edge training, advanced research, and modern technology, including Artificial Intelligence, to ensure they stay ahead of emerging threats,” he stated.
Ruto also outlined the government’s commitment to research and innovation, announcing an increase in the national research fund from 0.8 percent to 2 percent of GDP.
The move is expected to unlock approximately KSh 1 trillion over the next decade to support research, technological development, and innovation across universities nationwide.
The president underscored the role of the National Defence University in driving strategic thinking and innovation. He urged graduates to apply their skills in critical and strategic analysis to tackle complex national challenges.
“Use the skills, especially strategic and critical thinking, that you have trained in to confront and resolve the complex challenges ahead,” Ruto said.
The initiative aligns with Kenya’s broader security strategy to create a more agile and capable defence architecture.
Government officials and military leaders at the event emphasized that technology adoption, especially AI, will enhance decision-making, operational efficiency, and national security preparedness.
NDU-K graduates were commended for completing rigorous training designed to prepare them for leadership roles within the defence forces.
The ceremony highlighted Kenya’s commitment to modernising its military while investing in research and innovation as key drivers of national development.
The government’s plans mark a significant step in integrating technology with national security and higher education, reinforcing Kenya’s position as a regional leader in defence innovation.
