President William Ruto has called for calm and dialogue in Tanzania following days of post-election violence that erupted after the country’s October 29 polls.

In a statement released on Monday, November 3, the Kenyan Head of State congratulated President Samia Suluhu Hassan on her re-election while urging all Tanzanian leaders to put peace and national unity first.

“On behalf of the Government and the people of Kenya, I extend sincere congratulations to Her Excellency Samia Suluhu Hassan on her re-election,” Ruto said.

“I call upon the patriotic people of Tanzania to uphold peace and the rule of law, and I encourage all political actors to embrace dialogue and tolerance to safeguard democracy and stability.”

Ruto emphasized that Kenya stands ready to support efforts to restore peace and stability in Tanzania, noting that the unrest had entered its fifth day and continued to threaten regional harmony.

“Kenya will continue engaging constructively in pursuit of a peaceful, prosperous, and integrated East Africa,” he affirmed.

However, Ruto did not comment on reports that several Kenyans were among those killed during the post-election chaos, an issue that has sparked international concern.

Human rights activist Hussein Khalid, CEO of VOCAL Africa, alleged on X (formerly Twitter) that a Kenyan teacher, John Okoth Ogutu, was among the victims shot dead in Ubungo, Dar es Salaam, during the election day unrest. His body is reportedly being held at Mwananyamala Mortuary.

The President’s message came just days after reports indicated that Suluhu had held phone calls with Ruto and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni amid escalating tensions in the East African nation.

According to African Intelligence, the discussions were part of diplomatic efforts to contain the violence that erupted after opposition leaders rejected the election results, which saw Suluhu declared winner with nearly 98% of the votes.
