Activist Shakira Wafula has stepped down from the Political Committee of the David Maraga presidential campaign, marking one of the earliest high-profile exits from a 2027 hopeful’s inner circle.

Her announcement, shared in a public statement on X, signals growing attention on how emerging presidential teams define their reform agendas ahead of the next General Election.

Wafula, who served as Secretary of the committee, said her involvement in the campaign’s operations had offered her firsthand exposure to how political strategy is developed within a national bid.

She noted that this experience helped her appreciate the challenges surrounding Kenya’s push for stronger governance frameworks and accountability.

The former Chief Justice’s campaign has been positioning itself around institutional reform, an area where Wafula has been vocal as a governance activist.

In her resignation message, Wafula explained that her decision followed internal reflection on whether her principles aligned with the values the campaign aims to champion.

She referenced the campaign slogan “Reset, Restore, and Rebuild,” but pointed out that meaningful reform requires deeper agreement on the core ideals driving the message.

According to her statement, the divergence was significant enough to warrant an immediate exit from both the committee and all campaign activities.

Wafula stated on X that she hopes her move will prompt “meaningful reflection” within the team.

She urged the campaign to strengthen its commitment to transparency, integrity, and ethical conduct, which she said should guide any national reform effort.

Her remarks reflect ongoing public debates about the character of political leadership, especially in a country where questions on governance and corruption routinely shape electoral conversations.

Her departure comes as early presidential factions begin consolidating their teams in preparation for the 2027 contest.

Historically, internal cohesion has played a decisive role in Kenyan campaigns, with parties and coalitions often facing scrutiny over how they manage internal disagreements.

Wafula ended her announcement by wishing the remaining committee members success, adding that she remains committed to promoting accountable public service.

Her resignation adds a new layer to the evolving dynamics around Maraga’s bid, which continues to draw interest due to his record in the judiciary and his emphasis on rebuilding public trust in state institutions.
