Police in Changamwe, Mombasa County, have arrested a suspected criminal linked to a string of violent robberies in the area.

The suspect, identified as Stephen Omondi, alias “Omosh,” was apprehended by officers on patrol in the BBC area.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), Omondi has been on their wanted list for several violent attacks carried out alongside armed accomplices.

Police said the group often targeted residents and businesses while armed with machetes, leaving several victims injured and property stolen.

“The suspect was arrested and arraigned in court earlier today to face two counts of robbery with violence,” the NPS said in a statement shared on X.

The service added that the arrest followed intensified patrols and intelligence-led operations aimed at curbing the rising cases of armed robbery in Mombasa.

Officers have since launched a manhunt for Omondi’s accomplices, who are still on the run.

Police urged the public to share any information that may help in tracking down the suspects, promising confidentiality for informants.

The National Police Service commended the Changamwe officers for their alertness and quick response, terming the arrest a significant step toward restoring public safety in the region.

The service also called on residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement agencies.

Authorities have been under pressure to deal with a surge in armed robberies reported in parts of the Coast region.

The latest arrest is seen as part of broader efforts by security agencies to dismantle criminal networks operating within Mombasa County.
