An official autopsy has confirmed that former politician Cyrus Jirongo died from extensive injuries sustained in a road accident, underscoring the dangers of high-impact collisions on Kenyan roads.
The examination, conducted on Wednesday by family pathologist Dr. Joseph Ndung’u, detailed severe trauma affecting multiple parts of the body.
Dr. Ndung’u reported that Jirongo suffered fractures in both lower limbs and two fractures in his right hand.
The examination also uncovered critical internal injuries, including a crushed chest, perforation of the heart, and rupture of major vessels, which led to internal bleeding.
“There were also crush injuries to the abdomen, including liver damage with significant bleeding into the abdominal cavity,” Dr. Ndung’u said.
The pathologist further identified a transection of the spinal cord at the thoracic level, which, combined with the chest and abdominal injuries, contributed to his death.
Dr. Ndung’u concluded that blunt force trauma from the accident was the direct cause of Jirongo’s passing.
Cyrus Jirongo was a notable figure in Kenya’s political landscape, having held parliamentary seats and been active in multiple party structures over the years.
He gained prominence in the early 2000s as the leader of the Youth for KANU 2002 movement and later participated in electoral contests for both parliamentary and gubernatorial positions.
His sudden death comes at a time when road safety remains a critical public concern, with Kenya recording thousands of fatalities from traffic accidents annually.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the specific circumstances of the crash, but the autopsy provides clarity on the severity of the injuries involved.
