Bungoma County youth met with National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula on Tuesday to discuss strategies for creating sustainable employment and improving local livelihoods.

The session provided a platform for young people to present proposals aimed at boosting economic opportunities in the county.

During the meeting, Wetang’ula described youth as “the backbone of society,” emphasising their importance in driving innovation and shaping future leadership.

He expressed commitment to coordinating with both national and county governments to ensure practical proposals are implemented effectively.

Participants shared ideas focused on creating jobs and enhancing social development within Bungoma.

According to Wetang’ula’s statement on X, these suggestions were practical and reflected the economic challenges many young people in the county face.

The Speaker also reminded attendees of their responsibility to maintain peace and abide by law and order during the festive season.

He stressed that stability is vital for economic activity and the success of youth-focused initiatives.

Bungoma County has a predominantly youthful population, many of whom experience high unemployment despite national and county programmes aimed at skills training, entrepreneurship, and employment creation.

Wetang’ula’s engagement follows a trend among Kenyan leaders to actively involve youth in policymaking and community development.

The dialogue highlights the ongoing efforts to bridge gaps between government plans and local needs.

By encouraging direct interaction with policymakers, the initiative seeks to ensure that young Kenyans have a voice in shaping programmes that affect their livelihoods.

Concluding the meeting, Wetang’ula extended his Christmas and New Year wishes to the participants, reinforcing the importance of continued collaboration between young people and government institutions.
