A group of 20 National Police Service officers have been recognised for exceptional courage in an event that highlighted both the risks officers face daily and the growing partnerships supporting Kenya’s security sector.
The ceremony, held at NPS Headquarters in Nairobi, saw the officers receive the Chandaria Bravery Award for their actions in high-risk operations across different parts of the country.
The acknowledgement comes at a time when Kenya continues to confront security threats ranging from armed criminal gangs to natural disasters. In this context, honorary programmes have become an important tool for strengthening morale within the service.
According to a statement issued by the National Police Service, Inspector General Douglas Kanja presided over the event and commended the officers for acting decisively in situations involving armed confrontations, rescue work and efforts to prevent harm during volatile incidents.
IG Kanja used the occasion to reiterate the service’s constitutional responsibilities, noting that officers operate under intense pressure as they work to protect life and safeguard public order.
He said the Chandaria Foundation’s continued engagement plays a key role in reinforcing professionalism within the service.
He further reaffirmed a commitment to improving welfare and training, issues that have long shaped internal reforms dating back to the post-2007 policing evaluations that pushed for modernisation and accountability.
The Chandaria Foundation, represented at the event by Mr. Atul Kshetry, said the award is meant to highlight the value of courage in frontline policing.
Mr. Kshetry expressed appreciation for the work undertaken by the police and acknowledged the crucial support provided by officers’ families.
He was accompanied by senior foundation officials, including Foundation Manager Vincent Rapando, Head of Security Isaac Jaabir Yugi and Head of External Affairs Patrick Kleru.
Several senior officers attended the ceremony, underscoring the event’s significance within the service hierarchy.
Among those present were DIG-KPS Eliud Lagat, DIG-APS Gilbert Masengeli, Principal Assistant to the IG Mathew Kutoh, Principal Deputy to the DIG-APS Dr. Masoud Mwinyi, and Director of Personnel Dr. Mwangi Wanderi. NPS Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga also participated.
The annual award is one of the platforms through which the Chandaria Foundation collaborates with national institutions on public-interest initiatives.
