The Kenyan government is advancing the transformation of the historic Bomas of Kenya into the Bomas International Convention Complex (BICC), a project aimed at positioning Nairobi as a leading centre for international conferences and exhibitions.

Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano visited the site on Monday to review progress and assess ongoing construction works.

During her inspection, Miano highlighted the rapid pace of development, attributing it to Kenya’s broader ambition to compete in the global Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism sector.

“The speed of execution reflects the country’s commitment to becoming a preferred destination for international business events,” she said in a statement shared on X.

The redevelopment project is designed to integrate modern conference infrastructure while preserving elements of Kenya’s cultural heritage.

Bomas of Kenya has historically been a hub for traditional performances and national events, and the government has emphasized that these cultural features will remain central to the site’s identity.

Under President William Ruto’s administration, the project forms part of a wider tourism strategy aimed at diversifying Kenya’s offerings beyond traditional safari and coastal tourism.

MICE tourism is seen as a high-value segment capable of attracting international visitors, stimulating local businesses, and generating revenue for hotels, restaurants, and service providers across Nairobi.

The BICC is expected to rival some of the best convention centres worldwide, providing facilities suitable for large-scale conferences, exhibitions, and corporate events.

CS Miano underscored the project’s dual focus: advancing modern infrastructure while celebrating Kenya’s unique cultural narrative.

The government has yet to announce timelines for completion or cost details for the BICC project.

Miano’s visit did not include discussions on the impact of construction on ongoing cultural programmes, though officials have previously indicated that such activities would continue.

The Bomas redevelopment reflects Kenya’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its position in the East African tourism market and attract a broader spectrum of international visitors.

Once complete, the BICC is expected to serve as a key pillar in Nairobi’s ambition to become a recognised global hub for business tourism.
