Former Mukurweini MP Kabando wa Kabando has remembered the late Cyrus Jirongo as a fearless political player whose influence could have rallied the opposition against President William Ruto in 2027.

Kabando said Jirongo’s independence and sharp political instincts made him a standout figure in Kenya’s political landscape.

Kabando recalled a 2009 Harambee for Mukurweini Technical Training Institute, where Jirongo joined other leaders, including Joe Nyaga and MPs from all eight regions, to support local development.

“He was ambitious, independent, and always ready to back initiatives that mattered to the people,” Kabando said.

The former MP also highlighted Jirongo’s role in exposing controversial incidents involving top politicians.

Kabando said Jirongo had publicly accused President Ruto of wrongdoing in two high-profile cases, reflecting his fearless stance in politics.

Jirongo cut his teeth during Kenya’s early multiparty era, including his youth activism at the University of Nairobi during the 1992 elections.

Kabando noted that while their early relationship was cautious, Jirongo’s political vision and boldness became clear over time.

Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Kabando said Jirongo’s leadership could have been a unifying force for opposition parties.

He offered condolences to Jirongo’s family, describing the late politician as a figure whose ideas and courage left a lasting mark.

“Our thoughts are with his family. Omwami CJ, your vision for Kenya will not be forgotten,” Kabando said.

Jirongo’s career highlighted the role of independent politicians in shaping Kenya’s democracy, combining advocacy for accountability with hands-on involvement in local initiatives. His death leaves a notable gap in Kenya’s opposition politics and public life.
