Dr. John Khaminwa has been recognised as the 2025 Jurist of the Year by the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) Kenya, highlighting his decades-long dedication to human rights and the rule of law.
The award, announced on Thursday, underscores Khaminwa’s influence in shaping Kenya’s legal landscape and defending justice in both high-profile and grassroots cases.
Former Mukurweini MP Kabando wa Kabando lauded Khaminwa’s recognition, describing it as a “heartfelt and well-deserved honour.”
Speaking on the award, Kabando praised the lawyer’s commitment to integrity and professional excellence, noting that the recognition coincided meaningfully with Kenya’s Jamhuri Day celebrations.
“Long live to the most conscientious lawyer in town! A befitting honour on a Jamhuri Day eve! Merit! Best 2025 recognition!” Kabando said in a statement.
ICJ Kenya highlighted Khaminwa’s unwavering dedication to upholding human rights and maintaining judicial independence.
“We hold you up today with pride, gratitude, and immense respect for your lifelong commitment to justice, human rights, and the rule of law,” the organisation said in its official announcement.
Khaminwa has been a central figure in Kenya’s legal community, representing vulnerable groups and challenging violations of civil liberties.
His work aligns with ongoing efforts in Kenya to strengthen democratic institutions and reinforce accountability, particularly in a political environment where electoral reforms and constitutional adherence remain focal points of national debate.
