Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has suffered a major political setback as one of his most influential supporters, Godricks Wanyonyi—the composer and singer behind the 2022 campaign hit “Natembeya Unapendwa”—has switched allegiance to Natembeya’s rival, Kiminini MP Maurice Kakai Bisau.

Wanyonyi officially joined the Fungua Movement, led by Bisau, citing unfulfilled campaign promises by Natembeya as his reason for leaving.

“Today, I speak with a heavy heart, but leadership must be about the people, not empty promises,” Wanyonyi said.

He lamented that Natembeya has failed to deliver on his pledges to improve livelihoods in Trans Nzoia, particularly under the Ukombozi Manifesto.

“The song, especially the lines ‘Kumutambo kukhumala, Engunyi Ekhumala‘ (Poverty is finishing us, abject poverty is killing us), was more than music—it was a plea for real action. I believed in that promise, but today I choose a future anchored on service and results,” said Wanyonyi.

Some political insiders argue that this defection may not immediately affect Natembeya’s 2027 ambitions.

However, it reflects growing unrest within his Tawe Movement, with several supporters leaving over perceived mistrust and dissatisfaction with the movement’s leadership style.
