Over 50 labour leaders from across Western Kenya convened at the home of COTU Secretary-General Francis Atwoli on Christmas Day for a festive luncheon, recognising his long-standing contributions to the country’s trade union movement.

The event, attended by union representatives including Isaack Andabwa, Secretary-General of the Kenya Private Security Workers Union, combined celebration with fellowship.

Andabwa described Atwoli as “the father of trade unionism,” highlighting his influence in shaping workers’ rights and mentoring emerging labour leaders.

The gathering included live rhumba music, communal dining, and personal interactions between Atwoli and his guests.

It served as a platform for leaders to exchange experiences, strengthen professional networks, and reflect on the year’s achievements within the labour sector.

Atwoli, a prominent figure in Kenya’s labour history, has served in various leadership capacities within COTU and beyond, advocating for workers’ rights and social dialogue.

His home in Khwisero has frequently hosted regional labour events, reinforcing his role as a unifying figure among Western Kenya’s union leaders.

The Christmas luncheon also reflected local cultural practices, where sharing meals and celebrating together are central to community cohesion.

Speaking at the event, Andabwa noted, “We are proud that God placed a leader of such calibre among us. Atwoli’s guidance continues to inspire our work and strengthens the values of unity and commitment in our unions.”

The celebration concluded with music and communal fellowship, leaving participants with a renewed sense of connection and appreciation for leadership within the labour movement.

For Atwoli, the event underscored the enduring respect and recognition he commands among Western Kenya’s union leaders.
