Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested three suspects and recovered an AK-47 rifle loaded with ammunition during a security operation in Uasin Gishu County.
In a statement released on Sunday, January 11, the DCI revealed that the firearm was found hidden in a thicket within a homestead. The rifle was fully loaded with 10 rounds of ammunition, raising concerns about the level of violence the suspects were capable of unleashing.
Authorities believe the three suspects are members of a dangerous criminal gang that has been terrorizing residents through armed robberies and other violent activities.
In one reported incident, the suspects allegedly stormed a family home, held the occupants hostage, stole their vehicle, and forced them to transfer money via mobile platforms.
Further investigations also linked the trio to a robbery with violence that resulted in the death of a pharmacist at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital on January 7, 2026.
According to the DCI, the arrests followed a coordinated intelligence-led operation involving detectives from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB), the Operations Unit at DCI headquarters, and local officers in Uasin Gishu.
“The three suspects are currently being processed for court appearance as investigations continue. Detectives are intensifying efforts to arrest other members of the gang who remain at large,” the DCI said.
Members of the public have been urged to remain alert and share any information that could assist investigations through the DCI’s toll-free number 0800 722 203 or via WhatsApp on 0709 570 000.
The arrest comes barely two months after detectives in Meru County apprehended six other suspects linked to a series of robberies.
During that earlier operation, police recovered two pistols and several rounds of live ammunition, underscoring the growing concern over armed criminal networks across the country.
