A tense incident unfolded at Maua Police Station after Igembe South MP Paul John Mwirigi stormed the station and assaulted police officers and Kenya Power officials.
Reports indicate that the drama began on Monday evening, January 19, when the MP’s personal assistant was arrested.
The assistant was allegedly found blocking Kenya Power officials who were on their way to Athiru-Gaitu to remove illegal power lines. The officials said the man claimed to be working for the MP and refused to let them carry out their duties.
Police later searched the assistant’s house and recovered several Kenya Power materials. These included aluminium conductors, two transformer fuses, iron climbers, and a safety belt.
Authorities said these items are used in power line installations and were suspected to be illegally obtained. The assistant was then arrested for grilling and booked at Maua Police Station.
While officers were recording statements from the Kenya Power team, MP Mwirigi reportedly arrived at the station accompanied by a group of people.
The MP demanded the immediate release of his personal assistant, leading to a heated confrontation that quickly turned violent.
During the chaos, the MP and members of his group assaulted two police officers and a Kenya Power official. They eventually left without securing the release of the assistant.
The victims sustained injuries and were rushed to hospital, where they received treatment and were issued with P3 forms to support further investigations.
Police have since launched investigations into the MP and his group for assault and malicious damage.
Mwirigi is currently serving his second term as Igembe South MP. He rose to national attention in 2017 after becoming the youngest MP in Kenya’s history at age 23. He later retained his seat in the 2022 general elections on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket.
