KNUT Condemns TSC Over Irregular Teacher Transfers

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has criticized the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for irregularly transferring teachers across counties, saying the moves violate established education sector regulations.

During a press briefing, KNUT officials highlighted that teachers perform better when they are posted near their homes and within their counties. They argued that transfers should only occur for valid reasons and must involve consultations with stakeholders to avoid disruption.

“Teachers should teach near their homes and in their counties. It is not acceptable that we keep getting teachers from other areas, especially now that delocalisation has been scrapped,” said one KNUT official.

He added that TSC has a responsibility to manage teacher postings, but this must be done fairly and systematically, not in a “barbaric manner.”

The union also emphasized that irregular transfers, particularly of long-serving teachers, could negatively affect students’ performance in national examinations.

KNUT described the recent delocalisation letters issued to teachers as punitive and inhumane, urging the commission to revoke them.

This is not the first time KNUT has opposed such transfers. Last year, the union opposed the delocalisation of teachers from Nairobi, warning that it could undermine the county’s education standards.
