As Kenya edges closer to the 2027 general election, uncertainty continues to surround Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s political future, with speculation intensifying over President William Ruto’s choice of running mate.
Although Kindiki is widely regarded as loyal, disciplined, and effective in his role, political analysts note that loyalty alone may not be enough. With re-election on his mind, President Ruto is reportedly assessing strategic options that could maximise votes, turning the deputy president position into a powerful political bargaining tool.
Observers say Ruto is keen on securing a running mate who can command significant regional numbers, making the seat highly contested across major political blocs.
A notable development is the growing interest from figures linked to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), now perceived as key allies of the ruling coalition.
Names being floated include ODM leader Oburu Oginga, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, and Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho, all seen as politicians with strong regional influence.
Attention is also firmly fixed on the Mount Kenya region, where Ruto is eager to rebuild political dominance. Potential contenders from the area include Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru and Ndia MP George Kariuki, whose rivalry is said to be driven by mutual ambition for the powerful deputy slot.
Laikipia East MP Mwangi Kiunjuri has also emerged as a possible contender, presenting himself as a figure capable of consolidating support from the mountain region.
Other names gaining traction nationally include Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, bolstered by her role as ODM chairperson, and Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya, both viewed as politicians who could help broaden Ruto’s electoral appeal.
Opinions remain split on Kindiki’s fate. Some analysts argue that his performance and loyalty have strengthened his position, making him difficult to replace. Others contend that the office of deputy president has gradually lost its political security and could be reshuffled if electoral mathematics demand it.
As alliances shift and ambitions grow, one thing is clear: the race toward 2027 is already reshaping Kenya’s political landscape, with the deputy presidency emerging as one of the most hotly contested prizes.
