Renowned University of Nairobi scholar and veteran political scientist Prof. Peter Wanyande has been appointed by President William Ruto to join the Council of Economic Advisors.
Prof. Wanyande is well known as a longtime economic advisor to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. His appointment places him at the center of the Kenya Kwanza administration’s economic policy planning.
The council is chaired by prominent economist Dr. David Ndii and brings together some of Kenya’s top economic minds. Other experts appointed to the team include Prof. Michael Chege, Prof. Karuti Kanyingi, and economist Joe Ager.
Recently, the advisory team was part of a delegation led by Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o that held talks with President Ruto at State House, signaling growing cooperation between leaders across political divides.
Prof. Wanyande previously played a key role in drafting the Azimio la Umoja coalition manifesto during the 2022 general elections. His move to President Ruto’s economic team comes at a politically sensitive time, as talks between UDA and ODM intensify in an effort to formalize a possible coalition ahead of the 2027 general election.
The appointment has sparked debate among Kenyans, with many viewing it as a sign of shifting political alliances and growing bipartisan engagement at the highest levels of government.
