Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has refuted claims that police officers were involved in the tear gas disruption at a recent Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) rally in Kakamega County.
The rally, addressed by ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, was held at Amalemba Grounds and saw chaos when tear gas canisters were reportedly thrown into the crowd.
Speaking during a church service in Kipkelion, Murkomen described the allegations against the National Police Service as misleading and politically motivated. He emphasized that security agencies were not involved in the incident.
Key points from Murkomen’s statement include:
Investigations underway: The Inspector General’s office is tracking down those responsible for the tear gas attack.
Warning to politicians: CS Murkomen cautioned against mobilizing youths to create insecurity during public meetings for political gain.
Commitment to public safety: The Ministry of Interior remains dedicated to protecting lives and property and preventing any attempts to spark violence or ethnic divisions.
The CS’s comments come amid rising concerns over political tensions and disruptions during rallies as Kenya approaches the 2027 general elections.
