James Orengo Defends State House Visit, Emphasizes Duty to Serve Siaya Residents

James Orengo has explained his controversial visit to State House Nairobi last year, stressing that it was motivated by his constitutional duty to serve residents rather than a shift in his political stance.

Speaking on Spice FM on Thursday, Orengo noted that engaging with the national government does not equate to political alignment. He said that governors must collaborate with the presidency to ensure that counties receive the necessary support for development projects.

The visit, which took place in November alongside several Siaya County officials, was hosted by William Ruto and attended by Members of the County Assembly.

The meeting drew attention because Orengo has been a vocal critic of the current administration, prompting speculation about a possible change in his political position.

Orengo dismissed such claims, insisting that his political views remain unchanged. He emphasized that constructive engagement with the national government is a constitutional requirement, aimed at benefiting citizens rather than seeking political favors.

“The Constitution encourages consultation and collaboration between national and county governments. Failing to engage could disadvantage our residents,” Orengo said.

At the same time, the governor warned against what he described as the slow return of an “imperial presidency,” cautioning that some leaders visit State House primarily for political favors, a trend that could undermine democratic accountability.

Orengo reaffirmed his commitment to protecting devolution and ensuring that counties, including Siaya, receive adequate funding.

He concluded that cooperating with the national government should never be mistaken for surrendering political principles.

His remarks underscore the delicate balance leaders must maintain between political opposition and constitutional responsibilities.
