Wetang’ula Calls for Tougher Road Safety Laws After Webuye Crash Kills 15

Webuye, Bungoma County – National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has urged Parliament to implement stricter road safety laws following a tragic accident at Malaha Junction in Webuye that claimed 15 lives and left over 21 people injured on March 10.

Speaker Visits Accident Scene

Wetang’ula visited the site of the crash on March 11, meeting families of the victims and facilitating the transfer of two critically injured patients from Webuye County Referral Hospital to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) for specialised care.

“To Members of Parliament, we must tighten the rules and regulations governing the transport sector,” Wetang’ula said, emphasising the need for legislative action to curb reckless driving.

Call for Action on NTSA and Courts

The Speaker also called on the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the courts to take urgent action:
NTSA should remove dangerous drivers from the roads.
Courts must ensure offenders who endanger lives face the full force of the law.

“Those who endanger lives must face the full force of the law,” Wetang’ula stated.
Details of the Crash

The crash involved a truck that lost control, ramming into a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) and a boda boda, causing a chain collision. Witnesses reported that the impact left bodies scattered on the road, prompting immediate rescue efforts.

Images and videos shared widely on social media showed heavily damaged vehicles and victims on the road, highlighting the severity of the incident.

Community Response

A funeral committee has been formed to coordinate burial arrangements, including Webuye East MP Marthin Wanyonyi Pepela, Bungoma Woman Representative Catherine Wambilianga, Deputy Governor Janepher Chemtai Mbatiany, and local assembly members.

Wetang’ula also announced a fundraiser on Sunday, March 15, and a joint requiem Mass on Monday, March 16, in Webuye Town to honour the deceased and support affected families.
