Senator Cherargei Pushes Audit and Possible Removal of Uhuru Kenyatta’s State Benefits

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has introduced a motion seeking a full audit and possible withdrawal of retirement benefits given to former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

In the proposal dated May 4, 2026, the senator is asking Parliament to review, reduce, or completely scrap the benefits and allowances awarded to the retired head of state under the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act.

Cherargei argues that the benefits are funded by taxpayers and are meant for a retired president who remains politically neutral. However, he claims that Uhuru has continued to take part in active politics, including attending rallies, making political statements, and engaging in consultations linked to ongoing political activities.

Because of this, the senator believes the law may have been violated and wants action taken. His motion calls for the Office of the Auditor-General to carry out a detailed audit of all public resources allocated to the former president since he left office in 2022. The audit report would then be submitted to Parliament within 60 days.

If the findings show misuse or breach of the law, Parliament could decide to withdraw, reduce, or reallocate the benefits. The motion also suggests that any money recovered should be redirected to support public welfare programs for ordinary Kenyans.

For the proposal to pass, it will require strong support from lawmakers, including a two-thirds majority in Parliament.

Overall, the move has sparked debate about the role of retired presidents in politics and whether they should continue receiving state-funded benefits while remaining politically active.
