2 Killed, Several Injured as Fresh Clashes Erupt Along Trans-Mara-Kisii Border

Two people have been killed and several others injured after fresh violence erupted along the Trans-Mara-Kisii border, sending residents into panic and disrupting transport, farming and business activities.

The clashes involved groups of youths from Kisii and Trans-Mara, with confrontations reported in several areas along the border. During the violence, farms were reportedly set on fire, while crops and businesses suffered major losses.

The situation also disrupted Sunday worship in some areas, with residents choosing to remain indoors over fears of further attacks.

Residents Count Losses

Residents of the affected areas said the clashes had caused significant damage to their livelihoods, particularly among farmers and traders who rely on the border for their daily income.

Kiango resident Richard Mainga said farmers had lost vegetables and maize, while traders were forced to close their businesses as the fighting intensified.

Security officials from Kisii and Narok counties held an emergency meeting at Nyabitunwa to assess the situation and coordinate measures aimed at restoring peace.

Kisii County Commissioner James Kamau said investigations had identified individuals suspected of inciting the violence and that authorities were taking action against them.

He also urged parents, elders and community leaders to intervene and prevent young people from engaging in further confrontations.

Elders Push for Dialogue

Although some youths did not attend the emergency meeting, community elders called for dialogue between the two sides to prevent the conflict from escalating.

Elder Julius Ole Kilusu said elders were prepared to engage the youths and encourage them to embrace peace.

Residents have meanwhile called for increased security along the border, particularly as schools prepare to reopen for the third term.

Initial investigations indicate that the latest violence began after two youths allegedly disagreed over a girl at a drinking establishment in Nyabitunwa. The dispute later escalated into wider clashes involving youths from the two communities.

Security officers have since been deployed to several parts of the border to contain the situation.

Growing Insecurity in Trans-Mara

The latest incident comes amid renewed concerns over insecurity in parts of Trans-Mara.

Another recent confrontation along the Nkaararo-Enoretet border reportedly left one person dead and scores injured after several days of fighting.

Residents have continued calling for a lasting solution to boundary and land disputes affecting communities in the wider region.

They want disputed boundaries clearly identified and resolved, arguing that unresolved territorial and land disagreements continue to fuel repeated confrontations.

Security teams remain deployed in the affected areas as authorities work to restore calm and prevent further violence.
