Komu, who is also a businessman in the hospitality industry, made his intentions known on Monday, August 31, saying he will seek the seat on a Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) ticket.
The businessman said his decision followed consultations with residents of Westlands, whom he claimed encouraged him to join the race under the DCP banner.
“I will be vying for the seat on a DCP party ticket. After much consultation with the locals, it’s apparent that it’s the party of choice for the majority. I am sure I will deliver the seat to the party,” Komu said.
If elected, Komu said his priority would be improving education in the constituency, including increasing the number of secondary schools across Westlands’ five wards.
He raised concern over the low number of secondary schools in the area, noting that some wards currently lack a local secondary school.
According to Komu, Karura Ward does not have a secondary school serving local residents, with Hospital Hill School being the main institution in the area but largely serving students from outside the ward.
He promised to push for the establishment of a fully equipped secondary school in every ward if elected.
“Once elected, I will ensure we contract one fully equipped school in every ward,” he said.
Komu is not new to elective politics. He previously served as a Member of the County Assembly (MCA) for Ndarugo Ward between 2013 and 2017.
His entry has added momentum to what is shaping up to be a competitive Westlands MP race, with several aspirants already expressing interest in the seat.
Among those eyeing the position is former Law Society of Kenya President Nelson Havi, who is also seeking the DCP nomination.
Other potential contenders include businessman Mike Gumo, the son of former long-serving Westlands MP Fred Gumo.
Moses Budamba Mudavadi, the son of Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, is also seeking the seat on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket.
Current Kitisuru MCA Alvin Olando has also declared his interest and is expected to contest on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket.
The race has gained attention following the decision by long-serving Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi to leave the parliamentary contest.
Wanyonyi, who has represented Westlands for three consecutive terms since 2013, is now focusing on gubernatorial politics and is reportedly eyeing the Bungoma governor’s seat on an ODM ticket in 2027.
