Speaking during a political rally on Friday, September 11, Onyonka challenged Ruto to concentrate on his responsibilities as President instead of repeatedly attacking his political opponents.
The senator accused the President of spending too much time discussing the opposition rather than focusing on issues affecting Kenyans.
“Your Excellency the president, yesterday you were talking about the opposition again. The problem we have with you sir, you talk too much. Just do your thing as a head of state,” Onyonka said.
Onyonka Defends Matiang’i
Onyonka, who has openly supported Matiang’i’s presidential ambitions, told Ruto that attacking opposition leaders would not change his political position or stop voters from backing the former Interior CS.
“Make sure you stop insulting people because some of us do not think that if you insult us, we will stop voting for Matiang’i,” he said.
He instead urged the President to convince Kenyans through his policies and approach to leadership.
“Convince us. Talk politely to us. But it looks like you don’t want to be polite,” the senator added.
Matiang’i, who is Jubilee’s presidential flagbearer, has been holding consultations with opposition leaders as political parties explore possible alliances ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Strong Warning Over 2027 Polls
Onyonka also warned Ruto against any attempt to interfere with the 2027 election, insisting that Kenyans want a free and fair contest.
“Mr. President, you are not going to rig our elections,” Onyonka said, adding that voters want an acceptable result so that whoever wins can be held responsible for improving the country.
Senator Questions Government Spending
The Kisii senator has also criticised the government’s management of public finances, arguing that Kenya’s challenges are partly connected to how public resources are being spent.
During a television interview on September 7, Onyonka questioned government expenditure under Ruto and compared it with spending during the final years of former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration.
He also raised concerns over spending on State Lodge renovations and government helicopters, arguing that public resources should instead prioritise essential services.
Onyonka further criticised what he described as the use of State House for political and empowerment events, saying government spending should focus more on sectors such as water, healthcare and education.
2027 Political Battle Intensifies
The senator’s remarks come as political mobilisation increases in Kisii ahead of the 2027 elections.
UDA has stepped up its activities in the region, while opposition leaders continue discussions on possible coalition arrangements.
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Siaya Governor James Orengo are among opposition figures who have held talks with Matiang’i as efforts to build a broader political alliance continue.
With Onyonka firmly backing Matiang’i, the latest exchange adds to the growing political contest between Ruto’s camp and opposition forces as the 2027 presidential race gathers momentum.
