Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba’s political journey has taken several turns since the 2022 General Election, raising questions about her plans as the country moves closer to the 2027 polls.
Wamuchomba was elected to Parliament on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket after strongly supporting President William Ruto during the 2022 election campaign.
However, her relationship with the government later changed. She became one of its vocal critics, particularly during the debate over the Finance Bill 2024.
At one point, Wamuchomba questioned whether she would seek another term on a UDA ticket, saying the party had failed to meet the expectations of her constituents.
Her political position later moved closer to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua as his relationship with Ruto deteriorated. Wamuchomba became associated with Gachagua’s side during the political disagreements that eventually led to his impeachment in 2024.
But in 2026, the Githunguri MP appeared to move back towards Ruto and UDA.
She attended high-level UDA activities, including a meeting at State House, and later publicly supported Ruto’s bid for another term in the 2027 presidential election.
Wamuchomba said her decision was influenced by the need to focus on development instead of continuing political disagreements.
Her latest remarks, however, have once again raised questions about where she stands.
The MP recently criticised government officials over what she described as interference in the planned handover of a police post in Githunguri. She also accused officials of punishing her because of her criticism of Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale.
Wamuchomba’s latest position has sparked debate over whether she is simply standing up for her constituents or adjusting her politics according to changing voter attitudes.
With 2027 approaching, her political movements will likely remain under close watch.
The bigger question is whether voters in Githunguri will view her changing alliances as political independence or as an attempt to protect her political future.
