Police are investigating two separate incidents in which three firearms — including two AK47 rifles and a G3 rifle — were stolen from officers in Nakuru and Thika.

In the first case, a police officer attached to Ngata Police Post in Menengai, Nakuru County, was attacked by unknown assailants who escaped with his loaded AK47 rifle.

The officer was later found unconscious outside the police post with a severe head injury. According to reports, he appeared disoriented and could not explain how or where the attack occurred.

At the time of the robbery, the rifle contained 30 rounds of ammunition.

In the second incident, thieves broke into the Maguguni Police Station armoury in Thika, stealing another AK47 rifle, a G3 rifle, and 150 rounds of ammunition.

A police officer on patrol said he was alerted by dogs barking near the armoury. Upon inspection, he found that one of the iron sheets had been pried open and the padlock broken.

“The steel storage box had been tampered with, and two rifles together with 150 rounds of ammunition were missing,” the officer reported.

Both incidents occurred between Tuesday and Wednesday, prompting a multi-agency probe to trace the stolen weapons and identify the culprits.

The thefts come just days after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested four suspects accused of stealing a firearm from a police officer during the burial of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

The weapon was taken from an officer escorting Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa during the October 19 event.

Investigations into the latest incidents are ongoing.
