The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has sent its condolences to the family of the late freedom fighter and politician JM Kariuki following the death of his widow, Mama Terry Kariuki.
In a statement shared on Thursday, the party expressed its sorrow over the loss, describing Mama Terry as a woman of “stoicism, quiet courage and extraordinary grace” who kept her late husband’s legacy alive through decades of personal and national pain.
“On behalf of the Orange Democratic Movement Party, its leadership and the National Secretariat, I convey our heartfelt and deepest condolences to the family of the late Hon. Josiah Mwangi ‘JM’ Kariuki following the passing on of his beloved widow, Mama Terry Kariuki,” the statement read.
The ODM Party noted that JM Kariuki remains one of Kenya’s most revered historical figures, whose assassination in 1975 left an indelible mark on the nation.
The statement described his advocacy for social justice, equitable development, and human dignity as “an enduring reference point in our struggle for a more just Kenya.”
ODM further highlighted Mama Terry’s role in preserving her husband’s memory, calling her a pillar of strength who carried the weight of a national tragedy with remarkable composure.
“She bore private pain with public dignity, kept the flame of JM's memory alive, and ensured his legacy remained a moral compass for generations,” the party added.
The party extended its sympathies to the Kariuki family, urging them to find comfort and strength during the difficult time.
“We in ODM mourn with the Kariuki family—children, grandchildren, and the wider extended family—and we pray that the God of all comfort grants you strength and peace,” it stated.
Mama Terry’s passing marks the end of an era for a family whose story remains deeply intertwined with Kenya’s political history.
ODM concluded its message by praying for her eternal peace and calling on Kenyans to uphold the ideals JM Kariuki stood for.
“May the memory of JM and Terry continue to inspire our country to remain true to the ideals for which JM lived, served and paid the ultimate price,” the statement read.
