Nandi Senator Kiprotich Arap Cherargei has downplayed complaints by Boni Khalwale and George Natembeya regarding the recent withdrawal of their security details, calling the move a calculated political manoeuvre ahead of the Malava Constituency by-election scheduled for November 27.

Speaking on X on Wednesday, Cherargei argued that the concerns raised by the two leaders are intended to generate public sympathy after their campaigns reportedly failed to convince voters.

He added that “the only sympathy available to them is a place called Huruma estate,” highlighting his dismissal of their claims.

The security details of Natembeya and Khalwale were reportedly withdrawn by the National Police Service (NPS) late Tuesday, with Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen stating the decision affects multiple politicians and is partly based on concerns over misuse of officers assigned to VIPs.

Natembeya, a prominent political figure in Western Kenya, warned that the removal of his security could endanger his safety, citing recent attacks at political rallies in Bungoma County as evidence of threats.

Similarly, Khalwale expressed unease over the sudden withdrawal and suggested it could be used to intimidate him ahead of the polls.

Cherargei’s response situates the dispute within the competitive political landscape of Western Kenya, where party rivalries have historically intensified during by-elections.

Malava, a key constituency in Kakamega County, has witnessed tightly contested races influenced by local party dynamics and shifting alliances, notably between Jubilee-aligned leaders and opposition figures.

Cherargei frames the withdrawals as a sign of panic among his political opponents rather than a genuine risk to their safety.
