Former Cabinet Secretary and presidential hopeful Fred Matiang’i has issued a message of condolence following the death of Kenyan gospel musician Betty Bayo (born Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua).

In a post on X, Matiang’i wrote that he was deeply saddened by her passing, adding that her voice and inspiration drew many closer to faith.

Betty Bayo passed away on Monday, November 10, 2025, after a prolonged battle with advanced-stage leukaemia, according to mainstream Kenyan media.

Her ex-partner, Victor Mwangi Kanyari, confirmed the news and said the family team had been at the Kenyatta National Hospital where she had been receiving treatment.

Matiang’i’s statement continued by offering prayers for strength and comfort for the late musician’s family, her ministry, and the entire nation as they mourn her heartbreaking loss.

The tribute reflects an acknowledgement beyond her music, recognising her role in the gospel sector and community.

Betty Bayo first rose to prominence in Kenya’s gospel scene, especially in central Kenya, with tracks such as “Eleventh Hour” and other popular worship songs.

Her public profile included candid discussion of personal trials, humbly connecting with audiences across socio-economic backgrounds.

Her passing has triggered a wave of tributes across the gospel music community.

Fellow artists described her as a humble and gifted singer whose work left a mark on the industry.

In his condolence message, Matiang’i noted the blend of voice and ministry in Betty Bayo’s work, and emphasised the importance of her contribution to the growth of gospel ministry in Kenya.

His remarks add to the public acknowledgement of her legacy at a time of loss.
