Tensions flared in Nairobi’s Kariobangi North Estate on Sunday, November 30, as rival political groups clashed outside a PCEA church attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The confrontation reportedly involved youths allegedly hired to disrupt the church service, who confronted a faction believed to be Gachagua supporters.

The altercation unfolded just minutes before noon, escalating into a violent standoff near the church entrance.

Police officers, already on high alert, intervened swiftly as the groups blocked access to the church. To restore order, the officers deployed tear gas and fired warning shots into the air, attempting to disperse the rowdy factions.

Footage from the scene shows residents and passersby running for cover as chaos spilled into surrounding streets. Authorities eventually cleared the area, but the incident left the neighborhood tense and shaken.

“The police acted promptly to prevent further escalation. We urge residents to remain calm and allow security forces to maintain peace,” a Nairobi County official said.

The incident comes amid heightened political activity in the city, with law enforcement warning of potential disruptions during public gatherings involving prominent leaders.
