As Kenya marked its 62nd Jamhuri Day on Friday, President William Ruto awarded national honours to senior public officials in recognition of their contributions to the country.
The celebrations at Nyayo Stadium drew regional leaders, including Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, Uganda’s Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, and Burundi Vice-President Prosper Bazombanza. Deputy President Kithure Kindiki was also in attendance.
The honours, part of a long-standing tradition of acknowledging distinguished service, were conferred on individuals across government and public service.
Attorney-General Dorcas Oduor, Cabinet Secretaries William Kabogo (Information, Communications and the Digital Economy), Lee Kinyanjui (Trade and Industry), and Deborah Barasa (Environment, Climate Change and Forestry) received the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya, Second Class, Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (E.G.H.). Other recipients included Dr. Pratt Kristina Kenyatta and Narok Governor Patrick ole Ntutu.
President Ruto described the awards as recognition for dedication, integrity, and putting national interests above personal gain.
“These honours speak about the value of doing what is right, serving the country, and contributing to a better Kenya for present and future generations,” he said, according to the State House statement.
Jamhuri Day, celebrated annually on December 12, commemorates Kenya’s independence in 1963 and the formation of the republic in 1964.
The day is traditionally marked with national ceremonies, parades, and recognition of citizens who have made notable contributions to the country’s development.
This year’s event highlighted Kenya’s regional ties, with leaders from East and Central Africa joining the official programme.
The presence of President Mahama underscored Ghana-Kenya diplomatic relations, which have strengthened in trade, education, and governance exchanges over the years.
State honours remain a key element in reinforcing standards of public service in Kenya, reflecting the government’s emphasis on integrity and accountability in leadership.
The awards also acknowledge contributions to policy implementation, governance reforms, and public sector management, which have been central to national development under successive administrations.
The ceremony concluded with a reminder of the importance of collective responsibility in nation-building, with President Ruto calling on all Kenyans to continue serving the country diligently.
