Police in Samburu County have launched a manhunt after five remandees escaped from custody at Wamba Police Station on the night of Wednesday, November 5, 2025.

According to a police report seen on Thursday, the dramatic jailbreak occurred at around 8:40 p.m.

The incident reportedly began when one of the inmates shouted that a fellow prisoner had collapsed inside a cell holding five remandees. When the officer on duty rushed to check on the situation, he opened the cell door—only for the inmates to push it forcefully, knocking him down.

The suspects then overpowered the officer and fled in different directions.

Police said the officer sustained soft tissue injuries on his right hand, head, and knee during the commotion.

Another officer, who was returning his firearm to the armoury, heard the noise and fired two rounds from his AK-47 rifle in an attempt to stop the escape, but the suspects managed to flee.

The escapees were facing serious charges, including illegal possession of ammunition and robbery with violence.

“We have deployed a multi-agency team to pursue the escapees. We urge members of the public to provide any information that may assist in their arrest,” the report stated.

The incident adds to a growing list of jailbreaks reported across the country.

In August 2024, thirteen suspects—including alleged serial killers—escaped from the Gigiri Police Station in Nairobi. Five police officers were later arrested and charged in connection with the incident before being released on bond as investigations continued.
