Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka visited the gravesite of the late opposition stalwart Raila Odinga in Bondo on Thursday, laying wreaths and offering prayers in a moving tribute.
Ida Odinga, Raila's widow, responded with heartfelt thanks, revealing a personal detail from their bond.
Musyoka and Odinga built a formidable alliance over decades, co-leading the NASA coalition in the push for electoral justice and constitutional change.
They also combined forces in 2022, where Kalonzo supported Raila and Martha Karua's candidature in the Azimio coalition.
Thursday's visit, on November 6, served as a quiet reminder of loyalties that outlast campaigns.
Ida Odinga spoke warmly during a gathering at the homestead, distancing herself from partisan fray.
"I am not a politician, so don't expect me to bring in any politics, but from what I know, Kalonzo Musyoka was a friend of Baba for many years, and their friendship can never be erased," she stated.
Her words painted a picture of enduring camaraderie amid Kenya's fractious arena.
Addressing Musyoka directly, Idah Odinga shared a cherished anecdote.
"My brother Kalonzo – Raila used to call him my brother Steve – thank you so much. Your actions speak louder than words," she said.
The revelation of the nickname "Steve" added a layer of intimacy, humanizing two giants of Kenyan politics.
Ida Odinga broadened her message to fellow leaders, advocating for harmony.
"I always tell people in politics there are no enemies. Don't fight people because they are in a different party," she explained.
This plea aligns with Raila's legacy of dialogue over division, even in tough times.
